Suffrage Mural Series
With Michelle Duster & Womxn’s Suffrage Collective
The Suffrage Mural Series Goes National!
Building on the success of the Chicago Suffrage Mural Series—the first public art dedicated to the suffrage movement in Chicago and the largest series on this subject in the country—we are excited to announce that artist Sam Kirk will create the next edition of the project in New York City! The opening of the Suffs musical on Broadway inspired us to expand the series to NYC and beyond.
Co-directors Michelle Duster and Neysa Page-Lieberman, with Associate Curator Marcela Andrade Serment, have established the Womxn’s Suffrage Collective including collaborators across the country to produce murals in various locations to commemorate the U.S. Women’s Suffrage movement. Each new mural will focus on location-specific historical figures and the continued legacy of activism, featuring women who fought for rights to enjoy full citizenship as voters in the U.S. democracy. This work strengthens the representation of diverse women-identifying histories, inspires deeper learning, and celebrates collective action towards civil rights and gender equality. Locations will be selected based on site-significance as it relates to historic moments or actions in the suffrage movement, and will be prominent and easily accessible for viewing.
Want to get involved and support women's representation in public art? Is your city a good fit for the Suffrage Mural Series? We’d love to hear from you! Get our info pack, and contact us here.
Generous support for the New York City suffrage mural is made possible through The Harnisch Foundation.
